The Senior Center … Who are we?
The Hood County Senior Center hosts a lunch at 11:30 Monday-Friday for Senior Citizens of Hood County. We also prepare Meals on Wheels for Granbury, Tolar, Lipan, and all of Hood County. The mission of the Hood County Committee on Aging is to provide nutrition, transportation, education, and recreation services to the 60+ population of Hood County so as to enhance and encourage independent living and individual well-being. The Senior Center plays a vital role in keeping Hood County Seniors happy, healthy, and able to continue to live independently in their own homes. The Senior Center believes that activities afford seniors a greater quality of life by keeping them busy and active. Throughout the year, the Senior Center provides a variety of educational seminars, health screenings, AARP tax aides, AARP drivers’ safety courses, and medical services. The Center also provides fun and invigorating activities to help keep seniors lively and healthy. Bingo, chair exercises, line dancing, bridge and other card games, a pool table, musical entertainment, and dancing are some of the activities. Our center offers a balanced nutritious meal each day to approximately 75 seniors at the center, and an additional 215+ seniors through Meals on Wheels. During fiscal year 2010 we provided over 63,960 meals. We served 48,946 Meals on Wheels to over 300 residents all over Hood County. We provided 15,014 meals at our congregate lunches in Granbury, Lipan, and Tolar combined. Granbury’s seniors utilize the center for many purposes. For most, the center is more than just a place to find a hot meal; the center is a place of friendship and fellowship. Transportation is available to the seniors of Hood County for doctor’s appointments, shopping trips, beauty shop appointments, and to the center for lunch. Satellite centers in Tolar and Lipan receive a hot meal delivered to their meal site once a week. We provide lunch for an additional 50+ clients through this service. The Senior Center and Meals on Wheels are a vital part of this community. Our vision is to be able to continue all of our services as well as meet the ever changing needs of the seniors in this community. By providing nutritional and transportation services for the seniors of Hood County we are enabling a generation of people to live with dignity and comfort on their own.
